Introduction:-
Arsenic is a grey substance which is said to be non-poisonous as it is insoluble in water and therefore cannot be absorbed from the alimentary canal, it change arsenous oxide. Which tasteless and very poisonous.
Source of Arsenic:-
The elements or its derivatives are met with in industry and agriculture.
Sign and Symptoms:-
Symptom in acute poisoning usually manifest within 15-30minutes after the dose. There is –
(i)Nausea and Burning pain in the esophagus, stomach and epigastrium.
(ii) Severe, continuous and persistent vomiting follows. Vomit may mixed with mucus and blood.
(iii) The main affect is diarrhea with tenesmus and irritation.
(iv) The stools are tinged with blood, watery like may rice water stools of cholera, and contain shreds of mucus membrane and fragments of the poison.
(v) Intense thirst
(vi) Painful cramps in legs may developed due to dehydration. Skin eruption may appear in late stage.
(vii) Collapse sets in, with cold clammy skin, pale anxious face, sunken eyes, dilated pupils, rapid feeble pulse and sighing respirations.
(viii) Convulsion or coma may precede death
When a large dose of arsenic is taken and the poison is quickly absorbed the symptoms of gastroenteritis may be absent and the symptoms of narcotic poison such as vertigo, headache, spasms, followed stupor and vascular collapse may be present. Death occurs in 2-3 hours.
Fatal dose:-
The fatal dose of arsenic in an adult in about 120-200mg.
Fatal period:-
The average fatal period is about (in large dose) is 2-3 hours where as in acute attack the patient may die in 7-10 days in the gastro intestinal found it is about 12-48 hours.
Treatment:-
Though vomiting has occurred the stomach should be repeatedly washed out with warm water and milk to remove arsenic particles adherent membrane of the stomach.
Butter and greasy substances are useful to prevent absorption.
